Class 4 and 5 students of Shree Nandi Ratri Secondary School, Kathmandu, gathered for an energetic and imaginative storytelling session titled The Biggest Carrot in Town. This session marked the third storytelling workshop in the series organized by the Lions Club of Kathmandu Couples, an initiative dedicated to promoting reading culture and nurturing a love for stories in government schools.

About the Story

The Biggest Carrot in Town is an adaptation of the classic Russian folktale The Enormous Turnip, reimagined and written for performance by Bansri Pandey. The story follows a farmer who grows an unusually gigantic carrot but cannot pull it out alone. One by one, family members and animals join in, discovering that only through cooperation and collective effort can they succeed.

Performed solo by Bansri Pandey, the storytelling relied on just a single prop—a string. With this minimal element, the stage transformed into fields, homes, and a growing carrot patch through voice, movement, and audience imagination.

Students were invited to participate actively, becoming characters in the pulling chain and responding to rhythmic cues. Their voices rose in excitement as they repeated lines, predicted outcomes, and physically leaned into the act of “pulling” the enormous carrot. The simplicity of the prop allowed their imagination to fill in the rest, turning the classroom into a vibrant story world.

Engagement & Learning

The atmosphere was lively and focused, with students fully hooked from the very beginning. The repeated phrases and interactive structure encouraged them to speak confidently in English, enhancing their language skills while enjoying the story.

As the pulling chain grew longer, so did their sense of collaboration and joy. Students listened attentively, volunteered eagerly, and supported one another during the participatory moments.

This workshop once again reaffirmed how storytelling can be a powerful tool—not only to entertain, but to strengthen imagination, communication skills, and collective learning.
